The best film of the year by one of the greatest directors alive right now, Parasite combines all the craft and genre defying beats of a typical Bong Joon-ho film with a sardonic theme and an able cast. From comedy, to caper, to drama, to full-on horror, the film effortlessly slaloms through its 2 hour runtime with various cinematic staples to a rousingly entertaining finale and a somber contemplative epilogue. It starts out as if it’s going to be a retread of the same themes found in Joel Potrykus’ American film, Buzzard, a character or group of characters exploiting a tiny opening overlooked by society and making their living off those means. But at about the hour mark, the film morphs into a twisted and allegorical suspense thriller that wouldn’t make audiences cringe so much as it would make them cackle at the absurdity of the situations being presented.

The ending, where ki woo writes a letter to his father suggests that now his desire for wealth and status has mixed with his need to provide safety for his family. At the foundation of this emotion is money and the psychological motivation it precipitates. Is Kevin still ashamed of how he looks in a wealthy setting by the film’s end? He wonders aloud that the people treating him, a doctor and a detective, don’t look like a stereotypical person in those types of professions.
